Environmental monitors often liaise between with government agency representatives and project engineering and construction personnel to ensure that appropriate measures are implemented to minimize the potential for adverse environmental impacts. Environmental monitors are responsible for:
- Understanding the specific sensitivities of a given site and knowing how to minimize impacts to the environment
- Providing guidance to ensure that operations are carried out in accordance with permits and authorizations
- Delineating site boundaries and environmental features, isolating the site from watercourses, overseeing sediment and erosion control measures, conducting fish salvage.
- Advising construction personnel of environmental sensitivities, environmental impact mitigation measures and operational restrictions
- Assisting in on-site project construction planning regarding environmental controls and impact mitigation
- Conducting sampling to determine the effectiveness of environmental controls, and documenting construction progress, sampling results and site conditions
- Ensuring that spill response, sediment and other environmental controls, and site restoration measures are implemented in a timely and effective manner.
- Providing an independent record of construction progress, environmental conditions or incidences and the effectiveness of environmental protection measures.
